San Francisco Guardian 04/1995, by Heather Wisner on “While Waiting”

Tomi Paasonen’s “While Waiting” offered some strong moments, presenting the cure in the medical setting, as patients waited for test results in a doctor’s office. As numbers were called, each patient broke into a sequence recalling the events that put them at risk. Miguel Gutierrez played Fantasy Boy to Arturo Fernandez’s Patient A-R-E-R-65. As German industrial music pounded in the background, Paasonen put the pair through a vigorous, sexual duet, capped by Gutierrez, sheathed in a full-body rubber, spooling himself in yellow caution tape unfurled from a hole in the crotch of Fernandez’s long johns.
Waif-like Suzanne Gallo exhibited sinewy power as Patient S-U-G-H 36, frenetically skidding around the stage and grappling with a succession of suitors. Fernandez appeared in a poignant and hilarious pas de deux with a blow-up doll, which at last deflated.
